About the Event

Catalina Gaete-Salgado, a visiting researcher at CEOS.PP and a PhD student at the Complutense University of Madrid, will be hosting the webinar “Who tells the news now? A Qualitative Content Analysis of Political Influencers in Portugal and Spain” on 30 June.

The webinar focuses on analysing the role of political influencers as information intermediaries on Instagram in Portugal and Spain, seeking to understand the extent to which their content production practices influence democratic and journalistic standards. The research highlights a strong presence of emotional appeals, personalised comments and “breaking news” framing in the communication of public affairs – a phenomenon that is particularly relevant in a context where younger audiences are increasingly turning to social media as their main source of information.

The researcher holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chile (2014) and a master’s degree in Journalism, Media and Globalisation from the Universities of Aarhus and Amsterdam (2018). Catalina Gaete-Salgado has pursued an academic and professional career centred on investigative journalism, freedom of expression and studies on disinformation. In 2020, she co-founded the Chilean media outlet La Pública Chile, dedicated to investigative journalism using the Freedom of Information Act.
