The Centre for Organisational and Social Studies of the Polytechnic of Porto (CEOS.PP) and the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP) hosted the Forum ‘Disinformation, Journalism and Civil Society’ on 27 November.
National and Spanish experts took part in the event to debate the impact of disinformation on society and the role of journalism in combating fake news. The opening session was attended by Professor Sandrina Teixeira (coordinator of the project in Portugal) and Professor Manuel Moreira da Silva (President of ISCAP).
The forum featured two discussion spaces: a round table and a panel discussion. The round table, moderated by Miguel Saraiva, director of the Communication and Image Office of the Gaia and Espinho Local Health Unit, included speakers Rita Marques (president of the Livraria Lello Foundation), Fernando Zamith (professor at the University of Porto) and Rui Neves Moreira (Partner and COO of JLM_K). This was an opportunity to debate the role of institutions in promoting the truth and the challenges of digital communication, the fight against fake news and corporate responsibility in preventing disinformation.
The panel discussion was attended by students, teachers, researchers and guests from Portugal and Spain. The regulation of digital platforms; the preservation of journalism; the strengthening of pluralism, resilience, media literacy and the participation of civil society; fact-checking and the sustainability of fact-checking initiatives and public protection policies were the topics that were highlighted. These debates will be recorded and transformed into chapters of a digital book to be published in 2025. The Forum's closing session was attended by Alexandran Ntakou (Public Diplomacy Division (PDD), a member of NATO), who spoke about the importance of this project for society.
The event was promoted by CEOS.PP | ISCAP | P.Porto, in partnership with the research groups of the Complutense University of Madrid - INDESO (Legal Regulation and Digital Citizen Participation) and COMEIN (Communication, Methodologies and Innovation) - and is supported by NATO, through the ‘NATO Public Policy Fellowships’ programme, which aims to promote reflection and dialogue on the impact and prevention of disinformation, with an emphasis on the role of journalists.
